Best BL Ships Pt. I

Hey there to all my kings and queens.

We all have those two characters (sometimes three) we cannot get enough of in an anime and we keep watching the series to see what happens to them. Episode after episode we are given hints of their chemistry. We see scenes where the tone is set just right for a love confession or a kiss…but not every time are those confessions made and then the series ends without the two ever confessing their love and then we create fanart and alternative endings on WattPad just to satisfy ourselves (Banana Fish). But that’s why ships exist. Whether their relationship is specifically stated or we can obviously tell, we love them either way.

This edition of ships will be dedicated to Boys Love or male characters in a show that we all know should be together.

Without further ado, let’s get rollin!

Usagi Akihiko x Takahashi Misaki Junjou Romantica

So we all know them and love them. They were probably the first boys love a lot of us were introduced to… Usagi Akihiko and Takahashi Misaki from Junjou Romantica.

How these two became a couple is like a modern day soap opera. Akihiko has feelings for his best friend who is Misaki’s brother, who’s straight, but when he starts tutoring Misaki, Akihiko develops rather enticing and romantic feelings for him. I feel like I saw this in Days of Our Lives. I’m just kidding. This is actually the story of my life.

Anyways, their story is actually pretty intimate and contains a few accurate situations of what it is like to be discovering your sexual identity. You may often find yourself watching this anime screaming, “Why?!” when they face challenges that can break their ever-evolving relationship.

Nanase Haruka x Tachibana Makoto Free: Iwatobi Swim Club

Okay, so, to be honest, I’m pretty sure everyone in this anime was having sex each other to the point it was probably the Japanese version of Gossip Girl. Like I can literally see the arguments over who broke who’s heart and the love triangles in my head right now. But one relationship that will NEVER fail in this show is the relationship between Haru and Makoto.

I swear not only were they hot but the chemistry between the two of them couldn’t be any more obvious. The writers may not have had the characters state, “Haru, I’m in love with you,” but the measures Makoto made to make sure he would always be with Haru said it for us. He was always walking in on Haru while he was bathing and Haru didn’t mind it. There was a point where he stated further in the series, “I thought I know who I was but every time I’m around you, I get confused.” And the writers did that thing to where he wasn’t talking about a sexual identity when he said that, but it was a topic that could be easily connected to it. There are so many examples I could give you that showed the two had feelings for each other. And even though it tears me apart that it takes Makoto so long to express his feelings, that’s probably the best part of this show.

Storytime: Growing up as a gay teenager in the Southern United States, I didn’t know how to confess how I felt to guys. Much like Makoto, I had a best friend I had huge feelings for, but I didn’t understand what it meant to like another guy. No one said if it was okay that I did. Every other guy was trying to hook up with a girl. So I understand how Makoto and Haru felt. Being in that confusing state of understanding my sexuality. It was a fresh feeling, and I didn’t know how to take it on. Whether I liked my friend or even if he liked me back, all we could do was just playfully flirt with each other until one of us took that leap…much like Makoto and Haru.

Alright, enough rambling. On to the next one!

Actually, before I move on…

Yeah…steamy. Right? If that doesn’t show you that underlayer of intimate feelings, I don’t know what will.

Takato Saijo x Junta Azumaya Dakaichi: I’m Being Harrassed By the Sexiest Man of the Year

So…this GIF should just tell you everything about their relationship.

The veteran actor, Takato Saijo, was once the Sexiest Man of the Year for five years straight but was knocked from his throne by the up and coming actor turned scene partner turned lover turned fiancee, Junta Azumaya. He is handsome and charming. He looks like he would never do anything wrong…well, looks can be deceiving and that’s definitely the case for Junta. When he takes the drunken Takato home, homeboy stops at nothing to make Takato his. Our angel turns into a horny devil real quick in this scene, but the best part is, Takato seems to like it. From there, the relationship takes off. Takato does have difficulty expressing his feelings for Junta since he’s never been in love and thinks he is above an emotion such as that, but that doesn’t stop Junta from consistently pouring out his feelings to Takato. At the end of the day, this is probably the power couple of 2018. The day these two break up is the day the world will incinerate.

Victor Nikiforov x Yuri Katsuki YURI!!! On Ice

Of course, I had to give a shout out to Victuri. To the cutest couple on ice and land. The bond between these two is inseparable and how hot they look together cannot be denied.

Yes, this relationship started off as a student-coach relationship, but how the two came to be was adorable. We see Yuri doubting himself and his talent after finishing in last place in the previous Grand Prix Final. He asks himself if he should continue skating. Should he give up the love of his life? Until…his skating idol, Victor Nikiforov, is there at Yuri’s doorstep. Inspired by a video of Yuri practicing a set Victor had once performed, he offers to be Yuri’s coach. Yuri never had much confidence but this mentorship allowed Yuri to see the talent he actually has. It made him want to make Victor, his idol- now- coach, proud. And once this mentorship turned into “something a little more”, Yuri develops true happiness for the first time ever.

In episode 7, Victor tells Yuri if he messes up and doesn’t make it to the finals then he will resign as his coach…That didn’t go over so well with Yuri. He was already nervous about the Finals because he knew his performance would reflect on Victor, and he feared to lose him. Yuri specifically states, “You don’t have to say anything just stand by me,” as he cries and wails right in front of Victor. Afraid he’ll lose him. This episode shows us for the first time how much he actually enjoys having Victor by his side. How much he loves him.

Ash Lynx x Eiji OkumuraBanana Fish

*Sigh* For those of you who know me, you know that this anime is my absolute favorite anime. And those of you who’ve seen the anime, know why I’m sighing.

I cannot express how unstoppable the love between these two is. It’s the kind of unstoppable love that would carry on even when one of them is dead…*more sighing*

To sum it up, you have Ash Lynx a notorious gang leader in New York City who meets Eiji Okumura who is this everyday innocent Japanese boy there came to do research on gangs. When these two met Ash automatically took a liking to him. He didn’t fall head over heels but when Eiji asked to hold Ash’s gun, Ash let him hold it. Now, if that would have been anybody else, Ash would have taken their fingers off. However, we find out later in the series why Ash let Eiji hold that gun. He stated that Eiji was the first person to ever look at Ash as a normal person. That same day, Eiji helped saved Ash’s life without asking for anything in return. This has never happened to Ash. Ash Lynx who was bought as a sex slave at the age of 11, who was beaten and abused to this day, who has been given many things as long as he fulfilled his role as a killing machine/sex toy for the rich, Ash who is still considered property by his buyer six years later has FINALLY been shown love and kindness without condition. The two of them grow a bond so strong that both of them stated in the show, “I will die for you.” And their actions prove it. Especially Ash, who always comes to Eiji’s rescue when he’s in danger no matter the cost.

What these two share is love. Even though they never confessed their true feelings to each other until the bitter end…

Read my previous blog post “Why Banana Fish Ended The Way It Did” to check out my insight on the ending and the POWERFUL message it holds that needs to reach every ear.

  1. Haha! Amen! I know what you’re talking about and I was kinda surprised we went there that fast.

Usagi and Misaki never quite sit right with me due to the power imbalance in their relationship at the start. I really enjoy watching their relationship grow but those first few episodes makes it hard to get into initially and there’s always that lingering concern about Usagi taking advantage of his position.
Love so many of these couples and it was great reading this list.

    1. I’m not gonna lie that was definitely a concern of mine when I saw it and one of the reasons why I stopped watching it after two episodes. However, I kept at it hoping there were genuine feelings and I’m glad I did. That power imbalance did give me an uneasy feeling at first but nonetheless bloomed a pretty powerful relationship. I’m glad you enjoyed the list.
Sit tight for the next BL Ships! The next time we’ll talk about ships that may not exist in the series but damn well should.

I’ll look forward to your next post on it.
I still remember the first time I watched episode one of Junjou Romantica. I don’t think I’ve ever reached for the volume control that fast in my life.
